About Us
The Calton Consort
The Calton Consort was founded in 2001 by 12 friends, who were also singers, for a concert in aid of
a church roof appeal. The choir now
comprises around 30 singers directed by Jason Orringe and we typically perform three concerts a year
in and around Edinburgh.
In 2004 we performed in the Fringe for the first time and toured to
Iona in July 2005. We perform a varied repertoire, often a cappella, combining early music with 20th
century pieces and with an emphasis on less frequently-performed works.
Jason Orringe (Director)
Jason Orringe
studied Music at Cambridge University and then at Durham, where he conducted the University
Chamber Choir and Orchestra. As Chorus Master then Musical Director of Durham County Opera,
he developed an interest in music theatre leading to work with Cleveland Youth Opera and,
following a move to Amsterdam, Netherlands Opera. Since arriving in Edinburgh over 5 years ago,
Jason became Director of Music at St Michael and All Saints Church, Tollcross and was the
founding musical director of the Calton Consort. Jason teaches music in Edinburgh and
composes music, principally for the choirs he directs.
